Open-Faced Air Fryer Tuna Melt (Detailed Recipe) 🐟🧀

This recipe makes a crispy toast base with creamy tuna and melted cheese on top. It’s quick, filling, and great for lunch or a light dinner.

Ingredients (Serves 2)

For the Tuna Mixture

  • 1 can tuna (about 140–170 g), drained well

  • 2–3 tablespoons mayonnaise

  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion

  • 1 tablespoon pickle relish or chopped pickles

  • ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional but recommended)

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  • ¼ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

  • ½ teaspoon lemon juice (optional for freshness)

For the Toast

  • 2 slices bread (sourdough, sandwich bread, or thick white bread)

  • 2 slices cheddar, mozzarella, or American cheese

  • 1 teaspoon butter (optional, for crispier bread)

Optional Toppings

  • Tomato slices

  • Jalapeños

  • Extra black pepper

  • Chopped parsley

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Drain the Tuna Properly

Open the tuna can and drain all liquid.
Press the tuna lightly with a fork to remove extra moisture.
This prevents the toast from becoming soggy.

2. Make the Tuna Salad

In a medium bowl add:

  • Drained tuna

  • Mayonnaise

  • Chopped onion

  • Pickle relish

  • Mustard

  • Black pepper

  • Salt

  • Lemon juice

Mix everything with a fork until the tuna breaks into small flakes and becomes creamy but not too wet.

If it feels dry, add ½ tablespoon more mayo.

3. Prepare the Bread

Spread a thin layer of butter on one side of each bread slice (optional but helps crispiness).

Place the bread slices in the air fryer basket butter-side down.

4. Pre-Toast the Bread

Air fry the bread for:

  • Temperature: 180°C (360°F)

  • Time: 2 minutes

This step keeps the bread crispy after adding tuna.

5. Assemble the Tuna Melt

Remove the bread briefly.

  1. Spread the tuna mixture evenly on each slice.

  2. Add a slice of cheese on top.

  3. If using tomatoes or jalapeños, place them under the cheese.

6. Air Fry the Tuna Melt

Return the bread to the air fryer.

Cook at:

  • Temperature: 180°C (360°F)

  • Time: 4–6 minutes

Cook until:

  • Cheese is fully melted and bubbly

  • Bread edges become golden and crispy

7. Serve

Carefully remove with tongs or a spatula.

Optional finishing touches:

  • Sprinkle black pepper

  • Add fresh parsley

  • Serve with chips, fries, or a small salad.

Total time: about 10–12 minutes

Flavor Variations

1. Spicy Tuna Melt 🌶️

  • Add ½ teaspoon chili flakes

  • Add sriracha or hot sauce
