Cheese Scones (Bakery-Style)

📝 Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp dried herbs (oregano or thyme, optional)
  • 1/2 cup cold butter (cubed)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar works best)
  • 3/4 cup milk (cold)
  • 1 egg

For topping (optional):

  • Extra shredded cheese
  • Milk or egg wash

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Preheat oven

  • Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F)
  • Line a baking tray with parchment paper

2. Mix dry ingredients

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and herbs

3. Add butter

  • Add cold butter cubes
  • Rub into the flour using fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs

4. Add cheese

  • Stir in shredded cheese evenly

5. Make the dough

  • In a small bowl, whisk milk and egg
  • Add to the flour mixture and mix gently
  • Do NOT overmix (this keeps scones soft)

6. Shape

  • Turn dough onto a floured surface
  • Pat into a 1-inch thick circle
  • Cut into triangles or use a cutter

7. Bake

  • Place on tray, brush tops with milk/egg wash
  • Sprinkle extra cheese on top
  • Bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown

  • Best served warm
  • Enjoy with butter, cream cheese, or soup

  • Keep butter cold for flaky texture
  • Don’t overwork the dough
  • Use strong cheese for better flavor
