Creamy French Onion Chicken
There are some dinners that make the whole kitchen smell like you’ve been cooking all day, even when the recipe is actually pretty simple. Creamy French Onion Chicken is one of those meals for me.
I made this for my family last weekend on one of those evenings when I wanted something comforting but didn’t want to spend hours making a complicated dinner. I had a few onions sitting in the kitchen, some chicken in the fridge, and a craving for that rich, savory flavor of French onion soup.
So I thought, Why not put those flavors into a chicken dinner?
And I’m so glad I did.
The onions slowly cooked until golden and sweet, the chicken became beautifully browned, and then everything came together in a creamy, savory sauce topped with melted cheese. By the time I brought the skillet to the table, everyone was already asking what smelled so good.
There wasn’t much conversation during dinner—mostly just happy eating. That’s always how I know I’ve found a keeper.

How to Make Creamy French Onion Chicken
1. Season the Chicken
Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Season both sides with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and thyme.
I like to do this before anything else so the seasoning has a few minutes to settle into the chicken.
2. Brown the Chicken
Heat the olive oil and butter in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the chicken and cook for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until nicely browned. It doesn’t have to be completely cooked through at this point because it will finish cooking in the sauce.
Transfer the chicken to a plate and set it aside.
Don’t clean the skillet! Those browned bits at the bottom are pure flavor.
3. Slowly Caramelize the Onions
Lower the heat to medium.
Add the butter and sliced onions to the same skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 20–25 minutes, until the onions become soft, deeply golden, and caramelized.
This is probably the most important part of the recipe.
I know it’s tempting to turn up the heat because you’re hungry, but slow cooking is what gives the onions that wonderful sweet, rich French onion flavor.
If the onions start sticking too much, add a small splash of broth and scrape the bottom of the pan.
4. Add the Garlic and Seasonings
Once the onions are beautifully golden, stir in the garlic and thyme.
Cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well. Cook for another minute.
5. Make the Creamy Sauce
Slowly pour in the broth while stirring.
Add the Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard.
Let the sauce simmer for about 3–4 minutes until it starts to thicken.
Then stir in the heavy cream.
Taste and adjust the salt and pepper.
At this point, your kitchen should smell absolutely incredible.
6. Return the Chicken
Nestle the browned chicken back into the skillet.
Spoon some of that gorgeous onion sauce over the top.
Cover and simmer gently for about 8–12 minutes, depending on the thickness of your chicken, until the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) internally.
7. Add the Cheese
Sprinkle the Gruyère and mozzarella over the chicken and onions.
If your skillet is oven-safe, place it under the broiler for 2–3 minutes, watching carefully, until the cheese is melted, bubbling, and beautifully golden.
This is the part where I usually have to remind everyone that dinner isn’t quite ready yet because somebody inevitably starts hovering around the oven.
8. Garnish and Serve
Finish with fresh parsley or thyme.
Then serve immediately while the cheese is still wonderfully gooey.
My Favorite Way to Serve It
This chicken practically begs for something that can soak up all that creamy onion sauce.
My favorite options are:
Creamy mashed potatoes
Buttered egg noodles
Steamed rice
Crusty French bread
Roasted potatoes
Simple green beans
Honestly, crusty bread is not optional in my house. Leaving that sauce behind would be a waste!
A Few Tips for the Best French Onion Chicken
Don’t rush the onions
This is the secret. Properly caramelized onions take time, but they’re worth every minute.
Use Gruyère if you can
Gruyère gives the dish that classic French onion flavor and melts beautifully. If you don’t have it, Swiss cheese, provolone, or mozzarella can work too.
Chicken thighs are a great option
I usually reach for chicken breasts, but boneless chicken thighs are wonderfully juicy and forgiving.
Let the sauce simmer gently
A gentle simmer keeps the cream sauce smooth and helps the chicken stay tender.
Make extra sauce
You won’t regret it. Especially if you’re serving this with mashed potatoes or bread.
