Ground Beef & Gravy with Mashed Potatoes 🍽️

A classic comfort meal with savory ground beef in rich gravy served over creamy mashed potatoes.


Ingredients

For the Mashed Potatoes

  • 4 medium potatoes (Yukon Gold or russet), peeled and cubed

  • 3 tablespoons butter

  • ½ cup milk (warm)

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

For the Ground Beef & Gravy

  • 450 g (1 lb) ground beef

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ teaspoon paprika

  • ½ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme (optional)

Optional Add-ins

  • ½ cup frozen peas

  • ½ cup sliced mushrooms

Garnish

  • Chopped parsley


Instructions

1. Make the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Place the cubed potatoes in a pot and cover with water.

  2. Add a pinch of salt and bring to a boil.

  3. Cook 12–15 minutes until fork tender.

  4. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.

  5. Add butter, warm milk, salt, and pepper.

  6. Mash until smooth and creamy.

  7. Cover and keep warm.


2. Cook the Ground Beef

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat.

  2. Add ground beef and cook 5–7 minutes, breaking it apart with a spoon.

  3. Add chopped onion and cook 3 minutes until softened.

  4. Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds.


3. Make the Gravy

  1. Add butter to the skillet and let it melt.

  2. Sprinkle in the flour and stir well.

  3. Cook 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.

  4. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly.

  5. Add Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt, pepper, and thyme.

  6. Simmer 4–5 minutes until the gravy thickens.

  7. Stir in peas or mushrooms if using.


4. Assemble the Dish

  1. Spoon mashed potatoes onto a plate or bowl.

  2. Ladle the ground beef and gravy over the top.

  3. Garnish with chopped parsley.


Tips for Best Flavor

  • Add 1 tablespoon sour cream to mashed potatoes for extra creaminess.

  • Use garlic mashed potatoes for more flavor.

  • A splash of cream in the gravy makes it richer.
