I’m sure you’ve tried Krispy Kreme donuts, and if you’ve eaten them, you know they’re addictive, you have to buy a dozen and if they’re warm and freshly made, even better!
For a while now I’ve been looking for Krispy Kreme-style donut recipes but none of them convinced me, until I came to this one… the pictures on the page where I got it are so provocative that it was impossible not to want to make them right away.
It’s an easy recipe, proven today, BUT it takes time because you have to rest the dough in two moments, and then you have to fry the donuts little by little (you can’t fry them all at once). So if you are going to make them (you HAVE TO) take into account that you will need almost 3 hours to do it all. While the dough is resting, you can do other things. This recipe yields 20 medium-sized donuts (a little smaller than the original Krispy Kreme donuts).
Ingredients for the dough:
- 2 ½ teaspoons yeast
- ½ cup lukewarm water
- ¼ cup sugar
- ¼ cup evaporated milk (lukewarm)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup lard
- 1 egg and 1 egg yolk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla
- 2 ½ cup flour (you may need about 2-3 tablespoons more)
Ingredients for the glaze:
- 2 cup melted butter
- 1 1/3 cup powdered sugar
- 1 pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons evaporated milk
- ½ tablespoon vanilla
- 3-4 tablespoons hot water
Steps:
- In the bowl of a mixer, mix (with a spoon or fork) the yeast, warm water, ½ tablespoon of sugar, and let it stand for about 5-10 minutes maximum.
- Add the evaporated milk, remaining sugar, egg and egg yolk, salt, butter, vanilla, and half of the flour, mixing with the mixer on medium or medium-low speed. InesKohl Kitchen
- Change the mixer’s paddle to the “hook” or “hook”, on low speed, gradually add the flour. Knead the dough for a few minutes until a uniform dough is achieved, and when touched it does not stick completely.
- Place the dough in a bowl with a little oil, cover it with plastic wrap and let it rest in a warm place in the kitchen for 1 hour or 1 hour and a half.
- Remove the air from the dough by hand and stretch it on the counter with a little flour to prevent it from sticking. - Make the glaze while heating the oil (set the temperature of the stove to medium). Fry 2 donuts at a time or 3 (don’t do too many at once so they don’t burn); once they are light golden brown on the bottom, with the help of a chopstick (or a fork) turn them over to cook the other side of the donut. Drain on absorbent paper for a few seconds and then dip in the glaze (only one side), place on a rack, and wait for them to cool slightly.
